The History of Pad Thai
Thursday, July 14th, 2011We often get asked, what is Pad Thai? Well, we could tell you that Pad Thai is a rice noodle dish that has been around for centuries. Obviously originating in Thailand, the rice noodle was thought to have come to the Thai city of Ayutthaya by Vietnamese traders and was first made popular by Thai prime minister, Luang Phibunsongkhram during the 1930’s and 1940’s, during his campaign to reduce rice consumption within Thailand and increase rice exports.
He ordered the education of the poor in the production of rice noodles as well as preparation of the noodle dish and other ingredients to sell from small street carts and cafes. His efforts have paid off and now Pad Thai is consumed worldwide.
But that’s not the answer you were looking for, ok so Pad Thai is a rice noodle dish (you probably got that already), it also has bean shoots, roasted peanuts, egg, shallots and meat or vegetable of your choice, topped with chilli. It is the perfect combination of sweet, sour and salty.
